If you’ve been watching anime at any point over the last decade or so, you’ve no doubt heard the voice of Hisako Kanemoto. After making her debut in the 2010 series Sound of the Sky (Sora no Woto) produced by A-1 Pictures as Kanata, she went on to voice dozens of other roles including the title character in the 2010 series Squid Girl, Sailor Mercury in the 2014 reboot of the classic Sailor Moon Crystal, Veronica in the 2014 series The Seven Deadly Sins, Hinano in 2015’s Assassination Classroom, and most recently as Ethan in the 2018 series The Ancient Magus’ Bride.
Sadly, we’ve temporarily heard the last of Ms. Kanemoto as she announced on her official blog that she is taking a break from the world of voice acting. In the blog post, Kanemoto states that she plans to study abroad for the next year as it’s something that she’s always had an interest in. She also says that she wants to see the world and broaden her outlook on life. The good news is that she does plan to return in March 2019 so that’s something at least. In her blog post, she also thanked all of her fans and her agency for supporting her in this decision and promises that she will return.
Kanemoto is a stellar talent in the voice acting field and we wish her all the best in this new (albeit short) chapter in her life. No word on where she will be headed but we’re certain that fun and exciting times await her no matter where she decides to go.
Naturally, this leaves a couple of big questions in the air, however, as Kanemoto is a regular on Food Wars (she replaced Risa Taneda in the role of Erina for the third season) as well as Ami Mizuno in Sailor Moon Crystal which still hasn’t caught up to the Sailor Stars season which means those roles will likely have to be replaced should a new season start airing in the near future. Other than that though, it looks like Kanemoto has tied up all her anime affairs and is all clear to take off into the world.
Good luck Ms. Kanemoto! We all can’t wait for you to return to us in the spring of 2019 and share your stories from around the world. In the meantime, let’s hope that whoever is tasked with filling her shoes is up to the challenge.
