Love Live! Sunshine!! Manhole Cover Vandalized

Before she was attacked

See… this is why we can’t have nice things. It only took about a week before someone vandalized one of the Love Live! Sunshine!! manhole covers that we reported on a few days ago.

According to reports that were posted to Twitter, the manhole cover that depicted Yo Watanabe was defaced by someone on May 27th. The incident first came to light when a Twitter user noted that he was going to go out to take a photo of the cover but was surprised to find a police car pulled up in front of it. It seems that just a bit prior, someone had defaced the poor manhole cover (which, need I remind you, was only doing its job and totally minding its own business). As a reminder of what the cover looked like before it was attacked, I give you the example located to the right of this text.

There was another video posted to Twitter earlier in the day showing a group of guys trying to deface the manhole cover (and failing spectacularly) but that appears to be unrelated to the incident listed by the original tweeter above.

So let it be known here and now that these grave injustices won’t stand. While I am firmly in the camp of the original Love Live! series, I still do not wish to see harm to come to these bundles of moe. I hope that whoever committed this act of violence will feel so much guilt that they turn themselves in.

Naturally, I also think that this isn’t likely to happen but one can only hope that it all works out in the end. These manhole covers were installed throughout Numazu City in order to spread happiness and sunshine (yes, I went there) to fans of the series and to see them desecrated so quickly just makes me sad.

It’s always sad to see folks who can’t control themselves and feel the need to lash out at an innocent public service worker (she’s covering the sewer, I’m considering her an honorary public service worker) just doing her job. Let’s hope that this doesn’t turn into a trend that ends with us getting the manhole covers taken away for their own safety. That would possibly be the worst possible outcome in this particular situation indeed.
